Vacancy to Professor in Spatial Agriculture and Food Security

advertising

The Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente, undertakes education, research and project services in earth observation and spatial information collection, analysis and management.

The Department of Natural Resources (NRS) deals with the acquisition and use of earth observation data and spatial information for the sustainable use and management of agriculture, forest and natural areas. Our activities are carried out in a multidisciplinary context, both inside and outside ITC.
Job specification

The role of NRS as defined in the 2011 Strategic Plan is: The sustainable management and meeting of societal needs from the green cover (biosphere) by applying and developing geo-information, earth observation and spatio-temporal analytical tools. The Department uses earth observation data and spatial information in combination with systems modeling, geo-information science (GIS) and remote sensing for the assessment, monitoring, planning and management of natural resources, for their sustainable use, development and restoration under global change.

To further strengthen this role a Professor in ‘Spatial Agriculture and Food Security’ is sought. The work of the Chair in Spatial Agriculture and Food Security revolves around the quantitative assessment and parameterization of yields and the monitoring of systems through remote sensing and field based survey techniques, with links to GIS and global datasets. The emphasis will be on regional and global models using remote sensing and associated GIS data layers and analysis, for human-altered landscapes. Demonstrated expertise in and links with sustainable food production and agricultural systems are particularly sought. The Chair requires expertise in scenario development and simulated food security assessments. The Chair will develop and promote research concerning spatial aspects of sustainable agriculture across the ITC departments and UT-faculties.

Please be informed that ITC’s research field of interest is linked to the so called ‘Ploumen nota’ titled ‘A world to gain’. Ms Ploumen is the Dutch Minister for foreign trade and development cooperation. You are also invited to visit ITC’s website: About ITC and the website of the NRS department.

Your profile

The suitable candidate possesses a track record with focus on:

• Key specialization in remote sensing (RS) and GIS
• Recognized international position in spatial quantitative agricultural production system sciences
• Regional and global modeling, including the required dynamic feed-back processes
• Knowledge of broader issues in natural resources system and management, with the ability to integrate landscape components and system processes
• Experience with field survey based techniques and laboratory analyses.
