System offers a fully integrated test environment for A-GPS testing

The Spirent ULTS-ADS is specifically designed to meet the testing needs of core A-GPS technology & chipset suppliers. The ULTS-ADS offers a fully integrated and repeatable test environment for A-GPS testing, combining Spirent’s GSS6560 GPS simulator with industry standard test cases and assistance / signalling data provided over a generic API interface.

In A-GPS, the assistance server operating via a network helps a GPS receiver make range measurements and position solutions. The assistance server accesses information from the reference network and possesses more computing power than the GPS receiver. It communicates with the GPS receiver on the mobile phone on a network and with network assistance, the receiver operates quicker and more efficiently than it would unassisted since tasks are shared with the more powerful assistance server. The performance of an A-GPS system is therefore greater than that of the same receiver in standalone mode.

The technology is becoming more common, often associated with Location Based Services (LBS) over cellular networks being rapidly deployed by wireless service providers worldwide.

Therefore, A-GPS module and technology developers require a sophisticated test environment that includes GPS RF signals, assistance data flows and call signaling. The ULTS-ADS is a unique offering that routes messages to and from an A-GPS module. Both 3GPP Control Plane and OMA SUPL User Plane implementations are supported, as well as mobile-based and mobile-assisted positioning methods.

With the availability of the ADS configuration, the ULTS platform now addresses the full range of A-GPS testing needs, from technology and chipset development to design verification of GSM and UMTS devices and UMTS terminal certification.
