INPE confirms 7,0008 km2 of deforestation by shallow cut in the Amazon state

The National Institute for Space Research confirmed deforestation by shallow cut in Legal Amazon from August 2008 to July 2009 period, accomplished by PRODES – Monitoring of the Brazilian Forest by Satellite.

The system that uses the satellite images, estimates that the deforestation reached 7,0008 km2. For checking this rate, 92 Landsat images were analyzed. The margin of error for this measure is about 10%.

The smallest deforestation rate since the beginning of PRODES in 1988 already registered, was informed on Thursday by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the event in the “Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil”, in Brasília.
