WebGIS Technologies applied to traffic impact assessment

Institute of Transportation MOTC, Taiwan, planned to predict and improve traffic impacts on land development by a GIS platform. The project utilizes SuperWebGIS, the Internet Map Server Software developed by SuperGeo Technologies, to construct the GIS platform.

The project aims to maintain and update the image data, traffic basic information, traffic parameter, laws and regulations and assessment cases to assist the related staffs in effectively assessing traffic impacts caused by land development.

Using SuperWebGIS to develop the WebGIS platform and Microsoft SQL 2000 as the database platform, the project allows users to quickly query the related geographic information of traffic impacts from diverse databases via the platform, to evaluate the traffic impact immediately.

In addition, the project provides references of related geographic information of traffic impacts for the staffs by integrating GIS technologies with the mass GIS data and the metadata. Therefore, it is convenient for the staffs to query and apply the data to study and analyze cases via the Internet browser.

Traffic Impact Assessment project also helps government agencies conduct in-depth research in different land development solutions. The feasibility of combining other software, such as THCS, SYNCHRO and DynaTAIWAN, is also considered while this system is developed.

To sum up, a developed country might have a well-established transportation network infrastructure. However, the new development of land, such as a large scale of commercial development, would cause serious traffic impact and lower the efficiency of the transportation in some regions. Thus, to establish a Traffic Impact Assessment Geographic Information System is the best way to effectively integrate a large amount of traffic data from different administrative units, in order to assist the related staffs in quickly gaining necessary traffic information. Traffic impact can also be predicted and reduced in the future development.
