Nastek Tecnologia, a Brazilian company focusing on technology innovation, today announced the launch of Yon Bike Lamp, a hi-tech GSM/GPS tracker embedded in a bicycle taillight. The company also announced that Telit Wireless Solutions, a provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, products, was the company selected to provide M2M modules for the Yon Bike Lamp.
“The shift towards sustainability of the past few years has caused a lot of people to choose bicycles as a transport alternative leading to strong market growth,” said Lauro Cruz, Nastek Director of Technology. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, an estimated 864,883 people commuted by bicycle in 2012, a ten percent increase from 2011. In addition, ABRADIBI, a Brazilian bicycle market association, states that this market is worth about 1 billion US$ in Brazil. “However, as bicycles rise in popularity, so does theft. The need for solutions in response to demand from bicycle riders motivated Nastek to develop a product that is a security tracking device with the added value of a taillight and a fitness monitor.”
The internal fitness functionality in the Yon Bike Lamp helps manage the rider’s exercise regimen. The combination of accelerometer and GPS allows the Yon Bike Lamp to determine riding time and distance, instantaneous and average speeds along with estimating calories burned. All this data can then be shared on social media in real time.
“The Yon Bike Lamp is a product that takes full advantage of M2M technology to address increasing market demand,” said Ricardo Buranello, Telit Latin America Director. “It is a pleasure to work with innovative minds to develop smart connected devices. I look forward to further collaborating with and witnessing what is to come from companies like Nastek.”
