SkyFed takes off: Bringing federated geodata cubes into orbit

The SkyFed project is bringing federated data cubes into space. Based on rasdaman technology, modern Big Datacube analytics can now be performed on edge devices, particularly nanosatellites. This overcomes the limitations and incompatibilities associated with the massive Earth observation data streams.

SkyFed officially launched with its project kickoff on January 23. On site were the research teams led by Prof. Dr. Peter Baumann (Constructor University / rasdaman) and Prof. Dr. Antonio Francisco Garcia Marin (Bremen University of Applied Sciences – HSB).

Within the project, rasdaman GmbH is collaborating with the Institute of Aerospace Technology (IAT) and Constructor University to develop an onboard computer based on low-cost commercial off-the-shelf components. This will enable smart satellites that can operate collaboratively as a constellation. In addition, this constellation in space will be federated with an already existing multi-petabyte federation of data centers.

The goal is to create a prototype in which a Raspberry Pi cluster with rasdaman technology is installed on a low-cost nanosatellite to federate multi-petabyte services such as Copernicus archives and weather forecasts. Open standards will enable complete data integration, edge intelligence and combinations of data across data centres, clouds, drones and satellites. SkyFed is thus paving the way for the largest geo-data pool in orbit, providing standardised access. The two-year project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE), including via the Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation and the Bremer Aufbau-Bank (BAB).
