Gilberto Câmara, electronic engineer was renominated by the Minister of Science and Technology, Sergio Rezende, to hold the position of General Director of National Institute for Space Research (INPE) until 2013. Gilberto Câmara was the first name on the three page list forwarded to the ministry by the Search Committee responsible for the selection of the new director. His continuation in this position, which he has held since 2005, was announced on Thursday Nov.26, by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), in Brasília.
The search committee system has been adopted by MCT to hire top management for all departments of its research units. The selection, originates from a three page list which is forwarded to the minister, has always been performed by committee experts, as a headhunter search in the scientific, technology and entrepreneurs community; people that identify with their technical and administrative policies stabilished for each institution.
INPE’s committee was directed by Marco Antônio Raupp, president of the Brazilian Society for Progress in Science (SBPC), with the participation of Alberto Passos Guimarães, from the
Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas(CBPF), Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, (FAPESP), Hadil Fontes da Rocha Vianna, External Affairs Ministry (MRE) and Michal GArtenkraut, Associação Brasileira de Tecnologia de Luz Síncronton (ABTLus).
Gilberto Camara has stated that in his new administration he will continue with the research projects that are still in development, but will work on two major issues that are required by Rezende. “One of them is to extend the Inter-ministerial participation in the Brazilian Space programme”, requiring more involvement from the ministries of Agriculture, Environment, and Defense, for instance. “Among other things, getting more support from them will make the Space Programme more reliable for society” says Gilberto Câmara.
The other issue is to work on meteorological information collection, which nowadays INPE is responsible for. “The minister requested to improve information receipt by satellite, in the sense of providing more data and quality studies performed regarding to climate changes” said Gilberto Câmara.
