Researchers Define Biodiversity Map for the Most Important Brazilian State

Around 130 researchers are gathered in the city of São Paulo since last Thursday working on the completion of a map that will indicate the priority of biodiversity conservation and restauration areas in the state.

The workshop is being organized by the Biota/FAPESP Program, in association with the Fundação Florestal, Instituto Florestal, Conservation International and CRIA (Environmental Information Reference Center).

According to Carlos Alfredo Joly, Professor of the Botany Department of the State University of Campinas, the collective effort will result in a valuable instrument so that the State Environment Office can set public policies based on strong scientific data.

Following the conclusion of the works, a document, which will be a guideline for the future plannning of conservation areas in the state of São Paulo, will be produced.

The Environmental Information System of Biota was developed aiming to integrate the information generated by researchers connected to the Biota/FAPESP Program and relate it to a quality digital cartographical database, providing mechanisms to promote information on the biodiversity of the state of São Paulo to the scientific community, decision-makers, environmental policy thinkers and educators.
