In line with Vision 2016, the Botswana National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Committee in conjunction with Department of Surveys and Mapping (DSM) have embarked on a mission to provide up to date Geoinformation and also educate the nation at large on the importance of the acquisition, use and dissemination of geospatial data.

In the view of the above, both DSM and NSDI are organising a national conference on Spatial Data Infrastructure, to be held in Gaborone 26-30 November 2007. The theme of the conference is "working together towards an integrated geospatial data infrastructure for sustainable development".

The general objective of NSDI2007 is to show case GIS related projects within government parastatal and private organisations and provide a forum for exchange of information to the Geographic Information (GI) community regarding SDI developments in Botswana. It will be an opportunity to review the existing status of SDI and examine future demonstrate and discuss SDI challenges and developments in Botswana.

NSDI2007 will have sub-themes in areas of:

– Policies, e.g. procurement of spatial data and software
– Capacity building in the GI community e.g. Education
– Standards: what standards for fundamental and metadata
– Institutional framework
– Architecture and infrastructure for ans SDI
