The Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) will invest 150 billion KRW by 2016 to develop Smart Highway which integrates advanced GIS technologies on road, IT and automobiles. The Smart Highway will deliver higher safety, mobility, convenience, and comfort, and is expected to address traffic congestion, road accidents, and other challenges, and to meet demand for smart road in future society.

The MOCT started preliminary research in October last year for the development. The first stage development will focus on laying basic structures for road and safety facilities, and developing core technologies to build cutting-edge communications system and connect road and vehicles from 2007 to 2012.

The Smart Highway is expected to dramatically enhance mobility between major cities and improve traffic conditions on road. In addition, with development of advanced highway technologies, it will be possible to enter the global market for future road construction.
