Vietnamese scientists have completed a series of maps providing both general and detailed information on the natural environment of Vietnamese coastal areas. Dr. Bui Cong Que at the Institute of Geophysics said 70 maps were created using GIS.
The map series is a massive and systematic collection of both the most recent results and over 30 years of studies related to the coastal natural environment conducted by scientists from 12 research institutions.
"The GIS maps have a very high accuracy in spotting a certain location in the field", Que said, explaining that they also comply with the international systems and standards that allow users to trust the quality of the maps.
"The GIS maps allow users with computers to find and update needed information. They can easily connect and conform with any other maps they use". Que said the maps would also play an importante role for researchers of other sectors and natural resource managers specialized in the protection of the country´s coastal natural resources and environment.
The maps also highligh areas where natural disasters such as storms or tsunamis could occur, as well as areas rich in mineral and other materials.
Organizations and individuals interested in more information concerning the maps can access the series at the National Library of Sciences and National Center of Sciences Documents. The maps are consolidated onto four discs along with supporting information and a bibliography of all studies related to the maps. The maps are at the ratio of 1:1,000,000; 1:2,000,000 and 1:4,000,000. All information is in Vietnamese.
