Czech President Vaclav Klaus on Tuesday ratified an agreement signed by the European Union and South Korea in Helsinki on Sept. 9, 2006, on cooperation in Europe’s Galileo satellite navigation project.

The sectors for cooperation include radio-spectrum, scientific research and training, industrial cooperation, trade and market development, standards, certification and regulatory measures, ground augmentation systems, security, liability and cost recovery.

The Galileo project is a joint initiative of the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA). The project is aimed at providing an alternative to the two current global navigation systems – Russia’s Global Navigation Satellite System (Glonass) and the U.S.’s Global Positioning System (GPS).

Under the agreement signed by the EU transport ministers in November 2007, Galileo will be put into operation by 2013. The project is intended to provide more precise measurements than is available through GPS or Glonass, including better positioning services at high latitudes.
