The Panamazonia Project of the National Institute for Space Research was presented in February, in Bali (Indonesia) during the Eleventh Session of the Global Forum of Ministers of the Environment, promoted by a United Nations programming to the Environment (UNEP). At the request of the Environment Division of the Ministry of Environment and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, INPE has developed a proposal for cooperation to be developed in countries that have tropical forest coverage and technical capabilities according to the procedures and methodology established by Panamazonia.
The objective of the project "Looking at the world’s forests through satellite remote sensing" is to create technical capacity to monitor tropical forests, with procedures supported by free software and public images from satellites such as NASA-GEOCOVER & Modis and CBERS (China – Brazil Earth Resources Satellite).
The idea itself is to have the mapping divided into at least eight categories: forest, logging in forests, reforestation, coverage of the cerrado, deforestation and regeneration of cerrado, time of regeneration and reforestation, as well as hydrology and drainage.
The procedures will be applied in countries and regions previously chosen and transferred to local technical teams through practical training. At the end of the proposed activities, the crew will be able to analyze and improve the digital data sites, thus performing a continuous monitoring of the forest coverage and savanna in the countries involved.
