The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released on November 6 the Map of the Spatial Distribution of the Population, according to color or race – Blacks and Browns.
This is the first product of a technical partnership with the Department of Policies for the Promotion of Racial Equality (SEPPIR). In order to do this, the information on color or race in the 2010 Population Census was disaggregated along the 316,574 urban and rural enumeration areas involved in the operation. The product will be released during the III National Conference on Racial Equality, scheduled to finish tomorrow in Brasília.
According to the 2010 Census, 43.1% of the Brazilian population self-declared as brown. The largest percentage of this population was in the North Region (66.9%) . All the Major Regions unveiled percentages above 35%, except the South Region, which reported 16.5%. Still concerning the Census, 7.6% of the interviewees self-declared as black. Its largest percentage was in the Northeast (9.5%), followed by the Southeast (7.9%), whereas the South Region reported the smallest percentage (4.1%).
The technical cooperation between IBGE and SEPPIR aims also at producing socio-demographic studies and spatial analyses of the territories, including quilombola communities. In the future, the information about these territories will be included in IBGE´s territorial base.
