Geomaat, supplier of professional surveying services tailored to the needs of the design and construction industries, has worked together with Dutch research institute TNO to develop software for the automatic detection of objects from a 3D point cloud. Geomaat is using the software for various projects, especially in road-building.
The two organisations began their collaboration in 2009. Examples of modules already developed include for the automatic detection of road markings and guide rails. The new software enables 3D point clouds to be converted into a workable CAD or GIS file. For some projects, the lead time from measuring to delivery less than one week. Furthermore, these developments mean that Geomaat is now able to perform all the activities itself and no longer needs to outsource the work-intensive tasks.
Geomaat and TNO are currently working together on the development of new modules. Geomaat expects to be able to detect even more objects automatically in the future.
