The city of Brisbane, Australia, has included urban air mobility in its transportation planning for the 2032 Olympics. The document The Race to Gold – Brisbane’s Games Transport Legacy points out the opportunity the city has to enable flights with eVTOLs and integrate them with other modes.
According to the plan, urban air mobility could drastically reduce travel times between important sites in the region and also become a new option for boosting tourism in the state of Queensland.
During the 2032 Olympic Games, the aim is to offer electric air cab services between airports, the city center and competition venues. As a result, the city of Brisbane hopes to create more jobs and generate more business with urban air mobility.
The document points to four main opportunities for the city:
- Creating faster travel options to regional destinations including Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Scenic Rim;
- Exploring direct access do the innter city from major transport hubs
- Complementing future autonomous air taxi services
- Maximising tourism opportunities between domestic and private airports, Brisbane International Cruise Ship terminal and Games precincts
The details of this plan will be delivered by 2026, with approvals and tests by 2030. The expectation is that eVTOL flights will be operational by 2031, a year before the Olympics.
