Geokosmos has successfully completed a large oil and gas project for the interests of Nadymgazprom, one of the subsidiaries of Gazprom, the world’s largest gas company which possesses the richest natural gas reserves on the globe. Nadymgazprom is the third company in the Gazprom system in terms of the hydrocarbon production.

This long-term project was initiated in the framework of “The Yamal Peninsular and Adjoining Offshore Areas Complex Survey Programme” (drawn up in 2002) and lasted nearly five years. The scope of work covered six gas condensate fields – Medvezhye, Yubileynoye, Yamsoveyskoye, Bovanenkovskoye, Kharasaveyskoye, Novoportovskoye, and the total surveyed area comprised 5200 sq.km.

Airborne laser scanning combined with digital aerial photography was that prevailing technology Geokosmos specialists applied to their work, whereas the share of the conventional topographic survey constituted only 0,01% of the total volume of work. It demonstrates once again strong potential of the airborne laser scanning and proves that this innovative technology is becoming really essential when a man is opposed by the most powerful challenge – severe environmental conditions.

The Yamal Peninsular is a part of Northwest Siberia, known administratively as the Yamalo-Nenetskiy Autonomous Okrug (YNAO). Half of its territory lies beyond the Arctic Circle, winters last for eight months of the year with minus temperatures, and permafrost is a climatic feature, to a greater or lesser extent, of the entire region.

Gazprom and Nadymgazprom acquired high level accuracy information on their land funds and obtained a unified digital cartographic base. Large-scale digital topographic plans (1:500 – 1:2000), large-scale digital maps (1:10000) as well as cadastral plans and land management files allow the companies to analyze their existing infrastructure, single out the primary objects for renovation and evaluate that volume of investments crucial for the construction of the gas and transport system at the territory of YNAO.
