Site selection is always a core issue when you want to expand your business. The wrong site for a shopping mall may lead to unnecessary traffic congestion and extra delivery costs. Or an incorrect site for a military base will frequently disturb civilians and invoke unwanted conflict.

Since location can decide the fate of your facility, even the boldest decision makers will visit a prospective site and survey the surrounding environment before renting or buying it for their business. There are so many environmental factors that need to be considered, such as the distance to competitors’ stores, the number of potential customers, connections with suppliers and access to public transportation. Depending on the type of business, you may consider other factors like proximity to residential areas, the distance to a police station or the distance to a hospital.

In the past, you needed to collect the related geospatial data, taking much time and resources. When the necessary data is not available, it is common to use proxy data or make educated guesses. But now, by using GIS tools smartly, you can save time and money organizing and analyzing the geospatial data necessary to decide the location of your new store or office. You can find the optimum site to reach potential customers or the spot that has the widest service area. And then you can integrate different information efficiently with various tools and processes to make better decisions.

On 27th January 2016, Supergeo will hold a webinar about how to choose the right site for your business with various GIS tools. Please join us and explore the mystery of site selection together!
