The fire in the Brazilian base in Antarctica, besides being an emotional situation due to casualties and wounded people, it will delay the research in the region. Until a new base is built and the work resumed, there will be several years of wait.

The accident at the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, occurred last Saturday (Feb 25), exposed the fragility and improvisation of the facilities where the Brazilian scientists worked – there were 60 people on the base when the fire started.

Fire in the Brazilian base in AntarcticaThe base began to operate in February 1984, it was brought to Antarctica in sections through the Baron Teffé oceanographic ship.

The research programs that were conducted on the base allowed to investigate the impact of global environmental changes in Antarctica and its consequences for the Americas including the Amazon.

On behalf of MundoGEO, our hearts go to the families of the people who were killed and injured in the accident.
